In the age of social media, email marketing, and website ads, it is easy to forget that newspaper space ads can play an important role in your marketing plan. They remain a highly effective way to target your marketing message directly to residents of a specific region or members of a defined demographic such as young parents.

What’s the best way to create an ad that stands out and works hard for you? Let’s turn to the classic book Guerrilla Marketing by Jay Conrad Levinson. Levinson’s first piece of advice is, “Don’t let the newspaper people design your ad. If they do, it will look and sound like all the other ads in the paper.”

Levinson follows up that great insight with still more:

  • Put one word or phrase in extra-large type so your small ad will be perceived as a big one.

  • Use the word “free” whenever possible.

  • Convey a sense of urgency by stressing limited quantities or a limited-time offer.

  • Run your ad in the sports section if you are selling to men, the financial section if you are making a business offer, or on the food page if you are selling food.

  • Consider running your ad on the page where horoscopes are located — it’s one of the most frequently read pages in any newspaper.

  • Always include your address, phone, email, and website URL.
