I’ve been noticing something new when I do Google searches recently. A number of small companies that offer informational videos are starting to appear on the first page of search results. Often, their videos achieve top placement alongside the websites of far bigger companies.

For example, if you Google the term “retaining wall,” you will see lots of companies that make interlocking concrete blocks. But right in the middle of them is a link to a YouTube video from a landscaping company called GardenGuy.com that shows how to build a retaining wall. Of if you Google “car painting,” a video from a training school called LearnAutoBodyAndPaint.com is right there beside Maaco, the auto-painting giant.

So it seems that smaller companies that put informational videos on their websites, or on company-specific YouTube channels, are beginning to shoulder their way onto the first page of search results.

Does it really work? Apparently so, according to Wendy Stevens, CEO of a marketing company called Nashville Video. In a recent press release, she states that a video that is tagged with high-performing key terms has a “50 times better chance of appearing on the first page of results than any given text page.” She also states that this is happening because Google has restructured its search engine results to “reward dynamic original content that includes video.”

So if you are able, consider setting up a YouTube channel that does a good job of visually describing who you are and what you do. For the moment at least, it might help your company compete toe-to-toe with bigger companies in Google results.
